Giving Back is Fun and Easy with Seattle Works

From Seattle Works:

1500 Seattleites Will Volunteer, Celebrate and Take Action on Seattle Works Day

SEATTLE- May 27, 2009- On June 6, 2009, 1500 20- and 30-somethings will come together for an annual day of volunteering known as Seattle Works Day. The popular event is hosted by Seattle Works, the award-winning nonprofit that connects the younger generations with civic engagement, and presented by Accenture. Across the city, volunteers will dig in, get dirty and labor to make the Emerald City even more green. In one day, Seattle Works volunteers will contribute 5,000 hours of volunteer service to sustain a clean and healthy Seattle.

The 30 projects will focus on urban greenspaces. Teams of co-workers, friends, alumni and other social and professional groups will be mobilized to remove invasive weeds and protect native vegetation. Volunteers sign up as a team or individually to participate in projects at parks, trails, community gardens and other urban greenspaces from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event teams range from large employers such as Accenture, Microsoft, The Boeing Company, FedEx and Safeco to teams of friends such as the Seattle Works Action Team and Captain Planet & the Anti-Invasive Avengers. The $30 registration fee each participant contributes covers the volunteer t-shirt and the after party, and any remaining funds go to support Seattle Works engagement programs throughout the year.

“Seattle Works Day volunteers will walk away with a real sense of accomplishment and we’ll all benefit from healthier greenspaces.” said Alison Carl White, Executive Director of Seattle Works. “Seattle Works Day is an easy and fun way to do something for the Seattle community.”

Seattle Works connects volunteers socially as well as civically. After all the hard work, Seattle Works Day participants will come together for a celebration with music, food and fun at the Fisher Pavilion in the Seattle Center. Seattleites who want to participate can register on the Seattle Works website,
