Seattle’s Fair Trade Shopping Resources

If you’ve bought a bag of coffee in the last few years, you’re probably aware of the excitement around buying products that are labeled Fair Trade. But what exactly does that label mean?

The principals of Fair Trade are relatively simple: pay workers a fair wage; support workplaces where workers have a say in how businesses are run (including health and safety concerns); encourage public accountability; and protect the environment by ensuring that businesses use sustainable and responsible production methods. Sound great? It is. But how can you know for sure that what you’re buying is a legitimate Fair Trade product?

Just look for a certification label. The Fair Trade Federation, the Fair Trade Labeling Organization, the International Federation of Alternative Trade, and TransFair USA are all well-known and reputable sources of fairly traded products.

Where are the best places to find Fair Trade goods in Seattle? We like Ballard’s Market Street Traders, which offers everything from artisan-made textiles to sustainably produced packaged foods. While you’re there, ask to sample their Fair Trade fudge! Ten Thousand Villages, in the Roosevelt district, also offers a beautiful variety of Fair Trade housewares, jewelry, and other unique gifts. The Bonnie River Fair Trade & World Friendly Store and Far East Handicrafts are also wonderful.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for locally, try shopping online. Fair Trade Sports offers soccer supplies, rugby balls, and other active gear. The Global Exchange Fair Trade Store sells recycled jewelry, hard-to-find books, and a whole range of products for college students. Global Goods Partners offers beautifully made bags, scarves, and accessories. TaraLuna has a complete selection of organic, Fair Trade clothing for children and babies.

The bottom line? Where you choose to shop, keep in mind that the buck doesn’t stop with you.
